Description
The City of Sault Ste. Marie is planning to recommission the GFL Memorial Gardens sports and entertainment center. The GFL Memorial Gardens, constructed in 2006, is a three-story structure with approximately 134,075 sq. ft. The facility was designed to host a wide range of events including concerts, sporting events, family shows, conventions, and trade shows. It is also the home of the Soo Greyhounds Hockey Club of the Ontario Hockey League. The building has been facing several issues with increases in its energy use, comfort complaints, decreasing control over the ice platform as well as equipment compatibility issues as part of the technology currently in use is outdated. In order to address these challenges, the city is seeking support for their recommissioning plan which involves installing a new ice rink controller (Smart Hub Rink Controller manufactured by CIMCO) and a recommissioning of the refrigeration plant with older controls that will be kept and used in a back-up scenario. The city expects that moving forward with the smart hub technology, and potentially upgrading certain sections of the building will:
- reduce whole-building energy use by 5% to 15%;
- extend equipment life and reduce maintenance costs;
- allow staff to monitor energy use more thoroughly;
- reduce water consumption drastically.
