Description
The City of Ottawa will consider the use of micro–turbines and other technologies to collect methane generated at closedlandfill sites around the region. This investigation will assess the methane generation rates and long–term gas supplypotential of the sites, as well as establish the life expectancy of suitable levels of methane gas production required tomeet the minimum gas–utilization requirements. The development of such a facility would provide a source of electricitydirectly from the landfill. This facility would also serve as a best management practice to address high levels of methaneand a proactive way to address greenhouse gas emissions. Using these technologies, the City expects to achieve a 50per cent reduction in methane levels at the landfill.
