Description
The City of Quebec will conduct environmental characterization study of a contaminated site acquired in 2009 and located on Montmorency Boulevard, with a view to rehabilitating it and establishing an ecocentre and other municipal waste management facilities. The city, in its efforts to become a leader in environmental issues, is articulating its vision and priorities in a 2010-2013 Strategic. The proposed study is consistent with this Strategic Plan and with the Environment Department’s 2009-2010 Business Plan, both focused on sustainable development. Preliminary results of the environmental characterization revealed contaminated soil (over 4000 m3 contaminated by metals and/or sulphides and over 12,400 m3 contaminated by hydrocarbons) and groundwater on the site. Site rehabilitation will have numerous positive spinoffs for the community, for public health, for economic development and residual waste management, not to mention the revitalization of the sector.
