Description
The District of Mission will assess how to treat landfill leachate breakout locations, complete a toxicology assessment of the risks to human health and study options for developing a long-term leachate treatment plan. A multi-disciplinary team will explore options to a) implement future improvements to the existing treatment facilities while implementing less costly forms of treatment and closing specific areas of the site, b) close the landfill entirely, implementing minor treatment upgrades and transporting waste to another facility, and c) pump leachate to the municipal sewer system. The study aims to determine acceptable discharge levels and the timeframe required to reduce landfill leachate to acceptable levels. The goal is to meet and exceed minimum discharge criteria. The findings will dictate the timing and required components of an associated capital works project. Reductions in total suspended solids, ammonia, biological oxygen demand, dissolved oxygen, toluene, total iron and total manganese are projected to be on the order of 67 to 99 percent.
