Description
The discharge of ammonia from the City of Edmonton's Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant was significant, compared to background concentrations in the receiving water of the North Saskatchewan River. This feasibility study assessed options for removing the ammonia. Environment Canada had identified municipal wastewater as the largest source of ammonia releases to the environment. As well, a scientific panel had recommended that ammonia be declared a toxic substance under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act (CEPA). This project aimed to cut ammonia levels by at least 50 per cent, although the project team also explored the possibility of even higher reductions. This project was expected to provide good information if CEPA proposals were adopted and implemented.
