Description
A top priority for the City of Moncton is the preparation of a sustainable development vision for its downtown area and riverfront. This planning study will identify major issues with the downtown core and provide a plan to implement suggested actions and measures. The resulting Downtown Vision will address key objectives such as housing options, a well-designed transportation system that emphasizes non-motorized modes of travel and fosters the growth of public transit, public open-space access, effective land use promoting living in the downtown urban core and increasing the construction of energy-efficient buildings. The work plan is divided into three phases to be completed over seven months: initial data collection and analysis, design exploration, and production of the development vision and implementation strategy. The deliverables of the study will be a background report (what currently exists), 2030 vision and guidelines (what should exist) and an implementation strategy (how to make it happen). The result of the exercise will be incorporated into the Municipal Plan and Zoning Bylaw. Any future development that occurs in the downtown area will be evaluated against these objectives and standards. The result will be a sustainable neighbourhood with less environmental impact compared with traditional development in the region, including the reduction of urban sprawl. Implementing an effective transportation network and construction of energy efficient will reduce GHG emissions.
