Description
The regional county municipality of Montcalm will conduct a feasibility study to examine the possibility of building both a composting centre, for the processing of organic waste, and an eco-centre that would recover household hazardous waste, construction and demolition waste, recyclables, textiles and other materials. Led by two consulting firms, the project team will evaluate sites for a potential composting facility. Once the estimated quantity of waste is confirmed, the team will select the most appropriate composting technology and develop a preliminary design for the centre. A similar process will occur in the planning of the eco-centre, first focusing on the types of services to be included and on the different categories of waste that such a centre might receive. The combination of these facilities has the potential to raise the waste recovery rate from under 15 per cent to 54 per cent, while dramatically reducing the quantities of waste that must be transported to landfill sites more than 60 km away. It would divert 8,629 tonnes of waste per year from landfill, reducing about 1,305 tonnes of CO2 emissions.
