Description
The Regional District of Nanaimo (RDN) - a partnership of the City of Nanaimo, the City of Parksville, the Town of Qualicum Beach and the District Municipality of Lantzville - will complete Milestones 1, 2, and 3 of FCM’s Partners for Climate Protection (PCP) program. The final outcome will be the development of five corporate action plans and a regional community action plan. The data management system that will be established will enable the incorporation of GHG emissions tracking and analysis into day-to-day municipal operations. Information will also be incorporated into the RDN’s Geographic Information System (GIS). Public consultation sessions will be conducted to engage the community in setting priorities and to gain support for the local action plans (LAPs). The public outreach program will outline environmental issues and conservation measures relating to fossil fuel and electricity consumption. It will also address the management of solid waste, wastewater, and potable water across all sectors. It is estimated that the RDN and its four municipal entities could achieve annual corporate GHG reductions of 1,800 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) by 2012. It is also estimated that implementation of the community-wide action plan will result in annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emission reductions of 24,000 tonnes of CO2e by 2012.
