Description
The City of Timmins and Kinross Gold Corporation have identified several local buildings that could use a technologyknown as cavern thermal energy storage (CTES) to achieve both energy cost savings of at least 40 per cent andenvironmental benefits. The buildings are located within a short distance of abandoned water–filled underground mines.CTES uses the renewable hot or cold thermal energy that is stored over seasonal periods in the closed mines. Thestrategy could be extended to other facilities and businesses to help reduce municipal operating costs.
