Description

The Town of View Royal developed two new plans: a corporate energy and emissions sustainability plan and a community energy and emissions sustainability plan. The plans aimed to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in corporate and community buildings and engineering assets (fleet, water, wastewater and solid waste). Using Hyla Environmental Services’ Energy and Emissions Reporting and Monitoring System™ as a forecasting and planning tool, the town had already completed inventories and forecasts of energy use, energy costs and GHG emissions for both local government operations and the community. This information was used to set reduction targets spanning a 10-year period. The project team analyzed corporate and community buildings, and engineering assets, to identify energy reduction initiatives, their capital costs and simple payback, and resulting reductions in GHG emissions. The team also developed implementation plans that promoted strong collaboration among municipal departments and included processes for monitoring, verifying and reporting reductions in energy use and emissions. Partners for Climate Protection Milestones One, Two, and Three were incorporated into the project.
