Description

This project will apply existing cogeneration knowledge and technology on a smaller scale than is typical to examine the feasibility of building a combined heat and power (CHP) plant in partnership with local industry. This would help the Town become more energy self-sufficient at a lower cost to industry and residential customers. In addition to the assessment of traditional fuel options (fuel oil and natural gas), the use of bio-fuels (e.g., wood-waste from a local sawmill) will be explored. Excess electricity from the CHP will be sold to the provincial grid while waste heat will be supplied to industrial customers for steam generation. The overall project objective is to achieve an annual energy efficiency of about 75 per cent and boiler efficiency of 80 per cent. The Town estimates that carbon dioxide reduction possibilities are 33,690 tonnes per annum for a biomass-fuelled plant and 11,592 tonnes per annum for a heavy fuel oil plant.
