Description

The grant-funded staff person will implement initiatives that will produce a lasting improvement in municipal GHG emissions reduction. The first required phase of work is to a greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction plan. The plan will establish a baseline GHG emissions inventory, set emissions reduction targets, and outline actions to reduce GHG emissions for municipal operations and the community in all areas of municipal activity, including energy use, transportation planning, land use, waste and water management. The second required phase of work for the grant-funded staff person is to implement operational and institutional changes that will help ensure long-term GHG emissions reduction after the grant period. The third phase of work will be to carry out the preparatory work to be able to implement climate mitigation projects and the grant-funded staff person is required to move activities from the planning stage to the implementation stage over the course of the grant period. In Year 1, the Recipient plans to:• Developed a vision for climate change mitigation in the community through engaging with municipal departments, community partners and relevant stakeholders• Developed a GHG Inventory and set GHG emissions reduction targets• Developed a Municipal Action Plan (MAP)• Tracking and reporting on the progress made (e.g. through completion of the self-assessment of the municipality’s performance and progress using the Maturity Scale for Municipal GHG Emissions Reductions)• Continuously improving through seeking new opportunities for GHG emissions reduction• Established a Climate Change Action (CCA) Committee• Provide guidance on how to include climate change mitigation into municipal operations• Provide guidance on how to include climate change mitigation into corporate operations• Provide guidance on how to include climate change mitigation community-wide• Coordinate and overlook the implementation of the outlined initiatives within the MAP• Start awareness and information campaigning within the Town (through establishment of community partnerships)In Year 2, the Recipient intends to:• Continuously improve the MAP• Continuously seek new opportunities for GHG emissions reduction• Track and report on the progress made (e.g. through completion of the self-assessment of the municipality’s performance and progress using the Maturity Scale for Municipal GHG Emissions Reductions)• Provide guidance on how to include climate change mitigation into municipal operations in cooperation with the CCA Committee• Provide guidance on how to include climate change mitigation into corporate operations in cooperation with the CCA Committee • Provide guidance on how to include climate change mitigation community-wide in cooperation with the CCA Committee• Continue coordinating and overlooking the implementation of the outlined initiatives within the MAP• Continue awareness and information campaigns within the Town (through establishment of community partnerships)• Start dissemination of resources and results within the region
