Description

The City of Barrie will study options for the productive use of landfill gas (LFG) generated at Sandy Hollow Landfill. At present, with no gas recovery system in place at the site, decomposing waste vents passively into the atmosphere. The study will include an assessment of the quantity and quality of LFG at the site along with options for use such as adding organic waste to a digester facility to increase gas generation for heat and electricity; flaring the gas; using gas to construct a cogeneration system to supply heat and electricity to a nearby public works facility; or piping gas to the sewage treatment centre to use in an existing cogeneration system that will supply added heat and electricity. With a gas collection system in place, the city expects to recover 70 per cent of the LFG, with a potential reduction in greenhouse gas emissions of 51,000 tonnes a year. Other environmental benefits include reduced odours, less potential for explosions, lower vegetation stress, and less risk of soil and groundwater contamination.
