Description
The County of Brant will field test a number of waste diversion alternatives to find the best way to increase its waste diversion rate to the Province of Ontario’s target of 60 per cent. The field test will include about 200 urban and 100 rural households. Following a promotion and education program, the county will test several types of organic waste collection containers, a leaf and yard waste program, household hazardous waste collection and an expansion of the types of recyclable material collected. The project team, consisting of municipal staff and an external consultant, will evaluate the participation rates and effectiveness of these pilot programs and ultimately select a preferred option. The county aims to divert about 7,200 tonnes of residential waste once the new programs are implemented, reducing 140 tonnes of CO2-equivalent greenhouse gas emissions and producing 5,200 tonnes of useable compost. The diversion programs will extend the lifespan of the county’s landfill site and eliminate future need to export waste.
