Description
The Regional District of Central Okanagan will revise its existing solid waste management plan to address the present and future needs of this rapidly growing community. The plan will be developed and implemented based on short-term (Phase One – 0 to 5 years) and long-term (Phase Two – 6 to 10 years) goals. It is expected that it will recommend a 50 per cent diversion of demolition, land clearing, and construction waste in Phase One, followed by an additional 20 per cent diversion in Phase Two. This will result in an 18 per cent diversion of total landfill disposal. It is also expected that secondary programs recommended by the Plan will yield the diversion of 12 per cent solid waste in Phase One, followed by an additional 14 per cent in Phase Two. Finally, it is anticipated that total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from landfills will be reduced by 25 per cent in Phase One and by an additional 26 per cent in Phase Two. Other environmental benefits include an increased reduction in risks to groundwater and soil pollution, the production of compost for local use and an extension of local landfill capacity by approximately 10 to 15 years.
