Description

The City of Hamilton will develop a multi-residential waste diversion strategy to help meet its target of a 65 per cent diversion rate by 2008. The City will conduct multi-residential waste audits and background research to examine options for improving recycling collection rates and initiating organics collection to help, prepare the multi-residential diversion and communications strategy. Community consultation will take place through monthly updates provided to the City of Hamilton’s Waste Reduction Task Force, which represents 14 community members. The proposed waste diversion target for residents of multi-residential units is 65 per cent. This target will be met by improving the recycling participation rate and introducing a source-separated organics program. With full implementation, 11,400 tonnes of solid waste per year will be diverted from landfill. Reaching the City’s 65 per cent waste diversion target will allow Hamilton to extend the remaining lifespan of its current landfill site from 10 to 30 years. This will enable the City to take responsibility for the waste within its territory and avoid contributing to greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by trucking waste over long distances to alternate landfills.
