Description

Based on initial pilot studies carried out in 2003 at the City of Guelph Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP), the preliminary design for a proposed biosolids processing facility using Lystek International Inc. biosolids treatment technology has been completed. This field test will advance the preliminary design to a point where an advanced solids management facility can be fully automated. The ability of the Lystek processed materials to enhance digester performance and improve energy production, particularly during the winter, will be examined. The project will also assess the capability of the technology to produce pathogen-free product that can be land applied as customized fertilizer. The high solids concentration and low viscosity of biosolids processed using Lystek technology will enable the municipality to decrease the quantity of biosolids requiring management and storage and maintain lower cost handling equipment. It is estimated that the hydrolysis of the organic material and gas production can be improved by about 30 to 40 per cent. It is believed also that the Lystek process will enable beneficial biosolids reuse that can meet future regulatory upgrades currently being contemplated in Ontario and Canada that will likely follow USEPA Class A standards for land application.
