Description
The Town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands (NEMI) will develop a sustainable community plan to minimize resource use, protect the land and environment, strengthen the economy, strengthen the town’s social framework, enhance opportunities for arts, culture, recreation and heritage preservation, and position the community for future growth. The plan will include specific local issues in the sectors of brownfields, energy, transportation, waste and water.
The town will form an advisory committee made up of staff, councillors and community members and will solicit community input on choices, preferred actions and future vision through numerous community forums. A series of public meetings will result in a vision of community sustainability and a list of topics to be addressed in the plan. A key goal is to assess the current conditions, policies and procedures in place in NEMI, Manitoulin Island, the North Shore and the province. After gathering information and assessing NEMI’s current situation through consultation with council, staff and the public, the town will hold community meetings to identify specific issues. Focus groups will then further investigate issues, goals, targets and indicators. The town also plans to examine best practices in comparable communities.
The plan will be developed in partnership with other municipal plans and goals and will be linked directly to council’s strategic plan. Council will ensure that the plan is incorporated into daily municipal operations as well as the strategic plan. The town will monitor implementation of the plan and establish an ongoing reporting system.
