Description
The City of Hamilton has developed a Solid Waste Management Master Plan (SWMMP) that identifies programs andtargets to achieve a diversion rate of 65 per cent by 2008, extending the life of the landfill beyond 30 years. This projectwill pilot test a three–stream collection process (source–separated recyclables, organics, and garbage) in fiveneighborhoods (approximately 500 households each).This study will evaluate:1.Implementation of a three–stream waste collection in five pilot neighborhoods.2.The combined effectiveness of curbside organic collection, three–stream collection containers, and householdbehavior changes required to build a successful source separated organic waste diversion program.3.The feasibility of implementing three–stream curbside collection City–wide; and4.Findings and share them with other municipalities.
