Description
Hamilton Health Services (HHS) has been selected by the City of Hamilton to develop an 8.11-acre brownfield site closeto both the downtown area and the waterfront. The project will make use of existing sewer, water and road infrastructure, thereby reducing urban sprawl and preserving over eight acres of agricultural land. HHS and the City are jointlyinvestigating the use of environmental insurance to cap the cost of the remediation and limit the liability risk to bothorganizations. Through a Risk Assessment Feasibility Study, this study will assess whether a Site Specific RiskAssessment (SSRA) approach to site remediation is feasible. By treating and containing contaminated soils on site, theenergy systems SSRA approach would minimize the amount of contaminated soil trucked away from the site to landfills, thereby reducing fuel consumption, vehicle emissions, traffic congestion and the demand for new soil to replacecontaminated soil removed from the site. This would considerably lower remediation costs and improve the financialviability of the project. The study results will provide HHS with the information it needs to decide if it wishes to purchasethe site from the City. If the SSRA project outcome is positive, other communities may use it for public, private and publicprivate projects.
