Description
With its diverse economic activity, the City of Trois Rivières maintains urban infrastructures (roads, parks, canals, buildings, etc). and a fleet of over 400 vehicles of different types. In compliance with its sustainable development policy and action plan adopted in 2009, Trois Rivières decided to conduct a feasibility study to determine how to make its municipal fleet more energy efficient. This study, on which the city’s action plan hinges, will lead to finding solutions adapted to each vehicle as well as to the different employee groups. As a result, Trois Rivières hopes to reduce its fleet greenhouse gas emissions as well as its fuel, maintenance and insurance costs. On completion of the study, the city will be able to determine if it should scrap, replace, keep or reassign each individual vehicle. This initiative could be easily used by other communities, regardless of the size of their fleets. Although some technologies that will be proposed within the framework of the study may be cost-prohibitive, municipalities can benefit from learning about the principles of replacing current vehicles by more fuel-efficient ones or by reassigning them, making improvements in maintenance programs and training employees to drive more efficiently.
