Description
The City of Chibougamau will evaluate potential local renewable energy sources capable of meeting the long-term energy requirements of a new engineered landfill site (ELS). The ELS will be constructed on the community’s existing sanitary landfill site, which is powered by a gas generator due to its inaccessibility to the local Hydro-Québec electricity grid. The feasibility study will determine the new facility’s energy needs over the next 25 years and evaluate several options, including wind, solar, landfill gas (LFG) recovery and the reuse of residual combustible materials such as cooking oils. The project team will evaluate the various options against environmental, social, financial, aesthetic and logistical criteria. The team may also use Natural Resources Canada’s RETScreen International Clean Energy Project Analysis software as one of the assessment tools for determining the best system. The tangible environmental benefits will vary according to the specifics of the chosen system; however, evidence from a comparable LFG recovery system in Ontario suggests that there is potential to reduce about 5,026 tonnes of CO2-equivalent greenhouse gases annually and significantly cut landfill leachate loading.
