Description

The Northern Village of Pinehouse will conduct a study to determine the feasibility of implementing a municipal district heating, or combined heat and power system, using local wood waste. Currently, the 300 buildings in the community are heated by fuel oil and propane that are transported by truck, and electricity that is delivered through the provincial grid. The Village wants to eliminate completely the use of increasingly expensive non-renewable fuel resources and replace them with a municipal district energy system that will use the plentiful supply of wood waste from local forestry operations. The Village estimates that a municipal district energy system could offset up to 100 percent of the carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuels. Fuel consumption and associated emissions used in the transportation of fossil fuels over long distances would also be significantly reduced through the substitution of locally and regionally available resources. The Village estimates that such a system would also improve local air quality by eliminating the generation of compounds associated with smog, acid rain, and particulate matter. Finally, spills associated with refilling fuel tanks would be eliminated, thereby reducing the potential of contaminating the local water supply source.
