Description
The Towns of Appleton and Glenwood will build a single engineered wetland sewage treatment system to replace their individual lagoon systems, which are operating beyond capacity and failing to meet provincial effluent standards. This lower maintenance treatment system will use Kickuth Bioreactor technology, which has not been used on this scale in Newfoundland and Labrador to date. In comparison with aerated lagoons, the engineered wetland uses significantly less electricity since blowers are not required. The Town engineers estimate that the wetland will require 130,000 kilowatt-hours less electricity, for an annual saving of $9,000 in energy costs and an associated reduction of 33,000 kilograms of carbon dioxide per year.
