Description

In this detailed design study, a comprehensive economic and technical assessment will be made of the feasibility of developing the now closed Eastview Road Landfill site for greater emission reduction potential and for its use as an energy resource. The study will investigate the potential to incorporate the treatment of all landfill waste products (LFG, leachate and condensate) on site in one interconnected process, utilizing both the energy and waste heat generated by the facility. Based on an expectation that an addition 1,700 m3/hr of gas can be captured and utilized over the current collection system, approximately 3 megawatts (MW) of electrical power could be produced that would remain in and directly benefit the local community. This additional LFG capture is equivalent to 82,000 tonnes per year reduction in GHG emissions up until the year 2011. Feasibility studies making up the project include a marketability study, a leachate treatment system interconnection study, LFG treatment analyses and design, interconnect and power coordination studies and Hydro One connection studies. Maximization of the energy recovery system and the costs, revenues and risks are to be assessed. The project’s detailed design component will be completed based on the results of the individual feasibility studies.
