Description
The City of London is initiating a Green Power Initiative to reduce its dependancey on non-renewable energy sources. In this study, full Wind Resource Assessments and Feasibility Studies will be conducted at the Elgin Water Supply Plant and the Huron Water Supply Plant. Activities include wind tower installation, twelve months of wind monitoring, environmental assessment, public consultation, bird migration studies, power assessment and financial feasibility, site specific wind resource assessments and energy yield analysis, electrical grid protection requirements, site access requirements, preliminary conceptual design and site layout, and financial analysis (capital costs, operating costs, life cycle analysis and cost per Megawatt hour (MWh)). Assuming a 1.65 Megawatt (MW) turbine is used at the sites; it is estimated that the amount of electricity generated at each per year will be approximately 3,600 to 4,300 MWh and 2,900 to 3,600 MWh respectively. As a low-end estimate, the wind turbines would offset approximately 6,500 MWh of electricity from the grid annually. This would reduce annual CO2e, NOx and SO2 emissions by approximately 2,050, 8.2 and 2.3 tonnes respectively or 13 per cent. Other benefits include future cost savings, health improvements and municipal showcasing of green energy
