Description

Prince George, in partnership with its Downtown Business Improvement Association, will investigate developing acommunity energy system. These systems provide heat to buildings from a common energy source resulting in energysavings and net greenhouse gas reductions. There are three pulp mills and five major sawmills in Prince Georgeproducing wood-waste (biomass) that is either landfilled or burned. Soil and ground water pollution and increased airemissions result with significant health and environmental risks. Community energy systems that use biomass in state ofthe art boilers reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Prince George will assess the viability andimplementation required for a community energy system. The study will also examine the sources of waste heat fromlocal mills to show the value of community energy systems.
