Description

This planning study can do for sustainability what Milton Park did for housing cooperatives thirty years ago – provide a laboratory for the field evaluation of new ideas. It has the potential to lead to real innovation in how environmental best practices are applied to a particular urban neighbourhood. By defining and implementing a sustainable development plan for the Community of Milton Park in the District of Plateau Mont-Royal, the Montreal Community Development Corporation will set an example for other Montreal Districts and communities across Canada to follow. The project, which will form an integral part of the City of Montreal’s Strategic Sustainable Development Plan, has a broad approach based on integrated systems. Its objectives are conserving energy, reducing vehicle use, putting in place waste recovery programs, re-naturalizing and improving streetscapes, and creating new parks and green spaces. In Phase I, the focus is on community involvement to create a vision and elaborate a sustainable development plan. In Phase II a series of studies will be conducted to evaluate the potential of the best ideas generated in all environmental categories (transportation, energy, waste, water, contaminated sites). A significant reduction in greenhouse gases (GHG) is expected.
