Description

). Lakeland College and the Town of Vermilion will examine an innovative approach to solid waste management that will produce power using animal and municipal organic wastes as bio-energy. The study will establish an area inventory of organic wastes, identify their properties and conduct a preliminary engineering design of an Integrated Manure Utilization System (IMUS) for organic waste treatment. In addition to producing reusable water and a solid bio-fertilizer, an IMUS unit will produce 800 kilowatts of electricity for on-site operations. Surplus energy will be sold to the power grid. The College intends to use the plant as a training facility for other municipalities on the application of advanced environmental technologies for handling and utilizing agricultural and municipal wastes. Anticipated positive environmental impacts include mitigation of at least 9,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent greenhouse gases annually.
