Description
The City of Brantford will develop a solid waste diversion management plan (SWDMP) to give the community a strategy for raising its current waste diversion rate of 30 per cent to the Province of Ontario’s targeted rate of 60 per cent. The project team, composed of municipal staff and an external consultant, will begin by reviewing existing services and the recommendations of a 2003 study of the city’s waste management system. It will assess available waste diversion options, focusing on household organics and the processing of recyclable materials. The pros and cons of various collection methods, vehicle types and containers will be weighed, with the team developing a detailed financial analysis of both start-up and operational costs. By implementing the SWDMP, the city will divert about 35,220 tonnes of residential solid waste annually. The creation of a curbside collection program for household organics will divert 14,000 tonnes per year, substantially increasing the city’s overall waste diversion rate and extending the lifespan of the current landfill site. Increased collection efficiency will also cut operational energy use and related greenhouse gas emissions.
