Description
The Township of Lanark and its surrounding municipalities are low-income rural communities with a strong sense of environmental stewardship and an attachment to traditional rural values. The Township of Lanark Highlands has partnered with the North Lanark County Community Health Centre, the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority, ecoPerth, and other community groups to develop a Sustainable Community Plan (SCP). The SCP will build on the “The Highlands We Want in the Year 2020” municipal strategic plan, as well as other initiatives, including the 2003 Master Plan for the Revitalization of Lanark Village, and the 2004 Ontario Innovation Report. The SCP will have a general 100-year vision, a 20-year planning horizon, and a 5-year action plan. The Township is aiming for a 25 per cent reduction in corporate and community greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and water demand. The SCP will set firm reduction targets for these indicators and targets for increases in waste diversion, energy-efficient buildings, well water sampling and management, sustainable land management, and rehabilitated property. The Township will also develop a monitoring strategy to evaluate the impacts of initiatives resulting from the SCP.
