Description

The City of Waterloo, in partnership with the Region of Waterloo and the University of Waterloo, will conduct a wind energy assessment study at two separate sites - the Waterloo Region Emergency Services Training Complex (WRESTEC) and the City library/ fitness complex. The tasks of the Study are: installation of monitoring towers (4 anemometers per tower) including planning, site selection, geotechnical survey, and installation; wind data collection and correlation; data analysis; preparation of a final report including a complete data set and publication of results; evaluation of wind data for a potential capital project; assessment and cost- benefit analysis; a community survey including data analysis; a wind energy workshop and website: partner with other interested groups; create focus groups; create website. If the results of the Study indicate turbine installations would be successful, the City and the Region plan to install 200 kilowatt (kW) horizontal axis turbines wind turbines to produce energy for their use at the proposed locations. The City and Region estimate that the project can achieve the following results for both locations: CO2 emissions of 4,065 t/yr; NOx emissions of 8 kg/yr; SO2 emissions of 31 kg/yr. In addition, the generation of wind energy is expected to bring annual savings in electricity costs for both buildings in the amount of $38,000 ($11.5 cents/kWhr).
