Description

The Town of Canmore will construct a new fire hall to replace its current facility, which no longer meets the municipality’s service requirements. Some of the key challenges the current building presents include its inability to house a growing staff, and the aging infrastructure that would require major rehabilitation to extend the life of the facility. For these reasons, the town has determined a new facility is its number one priority.
The new fire hall is being designed to be both net-zero carbon and net-zero energy. To offset the building’s carbon footprint, solar photovoltaic (PV) panels will be used. Low-impact development measures that will reduce stormwater runoff and improve quality through infiltration are also part of the design. The building will be constructed from local wood and other materials that target a high recycled content. Project tasks will include finalizing the details of the design, construction tendering, construction and commissioning of the facility, and performance monitoring. This project aligns with the Town of Canmore’s Climate Action Plan and supported through Town Council’s Strategic Plan (2019–2022), which aims to minimize the impacts of climate change by reducing carbon emissions and waste generation.
