Description

Pollution prevention through reductions in releases of contaminated water is a very serious issue for many communitiesacross Canada. This study will examine ways to manage the storm sewer system by redirecting the storm flow from thesanitary system to a separated storm sewer system. This would extend the capacity of the existing Arnprior WaterPollution Control Centre, saving money, energy, labour and chemicals. As well as examining the cost and feasibility ofseparating the town's remaining storm sewers, the study will look at reducing or eliminating sewage bypasses, whichwould also reduce the pollutant load. The study will compare rehabilitating the existing pipes with replacing them. TheCity will incorporate the system into a new GIS (geographical information system) based documentation of the stormwater and wastewater sewer systems. Other communities of similar size will also be able to learn from this analysis ofthe options and potential benefits of storm sewer separation as well as the economic assessment of the benefits ofseparation.
