Description

The Town of Morris is expanding the existing curling rink and convention hall with the addition of a 4,240 m2 arena. In order to reduce the economic and environmental impact of the facility, an integrated heat storage system will replace a conventional heating system. The Town will use low temperature storage to make heat and cold stores that are matched to its needs. This will minimize energy inputs and provide for system simplicity. A building energy management control system will control demand, save energy and increase comfort levels in the facility. The facility will incorporate heat recovery ventilators, in-floor radiant heat in the new arena ice shed and dressing room areas, an energy efficient 3-way lighting system and florescent rink lighting. This highly innovative project, based on a rigorous feasibility study, improves on the standard heat pump assisted geothermal approach. The energy audit includes a strategic analysis of options with a life-cycle cost approach. It is estimated that an annual reduction of 706 tonnes of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) will be realized.
