Description

Enwave and the City of Toronto have entered into an Energy transfer Agreement to allow Enwave to make use of thecold water (available on a renewable basis) from deep within Lake Ontario. The Deep Lake Water Cooling (DLWC)project will use this water instead of conventional electric chillers, to chill the water at Enwave’s cooling plant. Thischilled water will then be distributed to Enwave’s customers - commercial buildings in Toronto’s downtown core - for airconditioning. The DLWC project is innovative not only in its use of renewable energy and geothermal technology, butalso in how it uses the deep lake water for two distinct and complementary purposes - for cooling and for potable water. The Enwave system will provide the same level of cooling as chillers but reduce the use of electricity and steam by 75per cent. The corresponding emission reductions forecast as a result of the reduced electrical demand are: carbondioxide (CO2): 36,400 tonnes per year; nitrogen oxide (NOx): 64 tonnes per year; sulpher oxide (SOx): 160 tonnes peryear; total suspended particulates: 137 tonnes per year. Water use in the buildings of Enwave’s customers will also bereduced (by approximately 21 per cent).
