Description
The Sunshine Coast Regional District, in cooperation with the District of Sechelt and the Town of Gibsons, will explore the feasibility of adopting a proactive solid waste management strategy that would integrate advanced environmental technologies new to the Sunshine Coast Regional District. A triple bottom-line approach will be used to assess the possibility of incorporating new landfill infrastructure at the Sechelt Landfill. The field tests and feasibility assessment of new facilities at the landfill will provide the information required to determine whether to pursue only landfill gas and bioreactor facilities, only landfill gas and co-composting facilities, or an integration of all three. The implementation of the entire program will yield greenhouse gas emission reductions, better resource use/reuse and possible renewable energy production. The project will incorporate a public awareness component (e.g., open houses, information sessions, etc.) aimed at community members, customers, employees of the partners, and other interested parties to raise awareness about the new municipal solid waste management technologies being tested in the project.
