Description
As part of its redevelopment of the Don Valley Brick Works, a former industrial site, into a mixed-use centre based on the Evergreen at the Brick Works Master Plan created under GMF 5527, the City of Toronto will do a feasibility study on the best way to implement its Risk Management Plan (RMP) and comply with LEED Platinum guidelines for sustainability. The research team will look at the feasibility of value-added activities in the implementation of the RMP, such as increasing stormwater infiltration, reducing soil disturbance and identifying sustainable approaches to site servicing. The team will evaluate soil and groundwater conditions, develop a soil management plan, produce a groundwater monitoring plan, analyze on-site remediation options and consult with the community on “green” site design. The team will also explore the construction of a ground source heat pump system, develop a roof plan and a stormwater management plan and analyze site servicing options. It is estimated that the redevelopment of the Brick Works will reduce greenhouse gas emissions annually by 1,380 tonnes or 40 per cent. The redeveloped site will also provide a venue for promoting the city’s sustainability objectives and programs. This feasibility study has the potential for broad application and dissemination of lessons learned to other municipalities in Canada.
