Description

The Regional Municipality of Durham is proposing to construct a new Water Pollution Control Plant, which the regionwould own and operate. Half of the new treatment plant’s capacity would replace an existing first–generation wastewatetreatment plant using outdated technology. Replacing that facility (the Harmony Creek Water Pollution Control Plant)would result in a substantial improvement in the quality of the effluent water discharged into Lake Ontario. This studywould assess the potential for biological nutrient removal. The resulting process would reduce the need for chlorine, alum and other chemicals used in the treatment process. The study will also investigate using new technologies, including advanced ultraviolet disinfection technology and heat recovery systems, to improve the energy efficiency of thenew plant.
