Description
The Town of Hardisty developed a Sustainable Community Plan to meet the needs of its growing population and future generations in a sustainable fashion. The plan entailed a vision for the future along with short-, medium- and long-term benchmark goals and targets. Various residents and other key stakeholders were consulted throughout the process, through the town newsletter, open houses and a web-based consultation site. To ensure that the plan’s scope was comprehensive and that the town identified all possible synergies, the plan and planning process involved all major municipal service areas including water, energy, waste, brownfields and transportation. The plan was also integrated with the town’s policies and its updated Municipal Development Plan to better guide future decision-making. Council aimed to select ideas with the most benefit to the community in the future, and to work with private developers by means of a scorecard to structure proposals to meet the town’s sustainable community plan guidelines. The plan and planning process were to be shared with the Flagstaff Inter-Municipal Committee, which represented 10 neighbouring municipalities.
