Description
The Towns of Stettler, Whitecourt and Fairview have entered into a partnership with Rink Pro Controls to test the Enviro-Liquid Cooler (ELC), which is an arena ice cooling system that uses outdoor winter air temperatures to maintain arena ice traditionally cooled using electric chillers. In this field test, the ELC will be installed and monitored at three geographically different locations in order determine the minimum temperature and size requirements for the technology. The ELC is an add-on system that is designed to complement an existing traditional arena chilling system. It resembles a large automobile radiator located outside the arena with a fan that draws outdoor ambient air across a set of pipes within the ELC to naturally cool a brine solution used to maintain an appropriate ice temperature. It is anticipated that the use of a properly sized ELC can reduce an arena’s electrical cooling demand by at least 30 per cent, with some geographic locations benefiting from a reduction of at least a 50 per cent. Based on a conservative 30 per cent reduction in cooling demand for the Town of Stettler’s arena, it is anticipated that the ELC would reduce GHG emissions by 110 tonnes.
