Description

Over the past several years, the Town of Bouctouche, Kent County, has enjoyed significant economic, tourism and cultural growth. This town in the Pays de la Sagouine plays host to a large number of tourists who come for its restaurants, accommodations, shops and recreational spaces. In 2006, with the support of the FCM, Bouctouche developed a green plan that recommended “the adoption of best practices [that would promote] a reduction in the long-term operating costs and [that] would help conserve natural resources.” In this context, the town decided to build an energy-efficient municipal facility, the James K. Irving Multifunctional Centre. Bouctouche will supply the Centre with energy via an integrated system that combines heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration. Using a ground-source heat pump and a CO2 control model, the Multifunctional Centre will use 61 per cent less energy than conventional heating and air conditioning systems. The integrated system is expected to save the town up to $203,352 per year. Given the number of Canadian arenas to be renovated in the years to come, municipalities facing this problem can learn from Bouctouche’s experience to develop their own project with a geothermal system. The Town of Bouctouche is ready to share the lessons learned with those wishing to learn more about this project. (Project description from original funding application)
