Description

A 30 per cent organic material diversion from the RCM of Kamouraska’s only landfill site is the goal of this project, which will determine the feasibility for full-scale implementation of a three-pronged (residential, commercial and agricultural) organic waste diversion program. The effectiveness and economic feasibility of two organic waste management approaches will be assessed in parallel: backyard composting of household organic waste and farm composting of combined municipal, commercial and agricultural waste streams. Local agricultural producers will process the organic waste using a composting system with aerated static piles equipped for leachate control. The potential to produce good quality compost for reuse for agricultural and gardening purposes will be assessed from results analysis. If proven to be economically feasible, this farm composting approach could lead to commercial opportunities. The Corporation environnementale de la Côte-du-Sud and the RCM of Kamouraska will coordinate public information activities by using different tools, such as, a guidebook, a CD-ROM, pamphlets, Internet and Intranet information, information sessions and door-to-door visits. Greater diversion of organic waste will expand the lifespan of the RCM of Kamouraska’s landfill site, decrease the number of truck trips to the landfill and odours generated at the site, and reduce the production of leachate and landfill gas. Project results will serve as a guide for municipalities within the RCM of Kamouraska and other rural communities across Canada.
