Description

The Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) will examine the feasibility of using renewable energy technologies in its extensive housing portfolio of new and existing developments. Following a review of building and development plans, the TCHC will survey a representative sample of its 2,200 buildings. This survey will include energy audits, tenant consultations and on-site evaluations of potential opportunities to use renewable energy. Using this information, the project team will develop separate plans to reduce greenhouse gases (GHGs) by five per cent, 10 per cent and 15 per cent by 2020. The plans will include an assessment of the most suitable mix of technologies as well as the lifecycle costs of each proposed system. City of Toronto staff will examine the zoning and regulatory changes required for the ensuing renewable energy capital projects. The implementation of these capital projects is expected to reduce GHG emissions by 15,000 to 45,000 tonnes annually, as compared to 2000 baseline levels.
