Description

The City of Montreal began implementing a series of energy efficiency measures at the Montreal Insectarium to reduce the insectarium’s energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and operational costs. These measures include installation of a closed-loop geothermal system, efficient lighting systems, a solar wall to preheat the air supply to ventilation systems plus variable-speed drives on the ventilation and pumping systems. The work began in September 2008 under the direction of the firm Ecosystem, which won the contract after a publicly advertised call for tenders. Work is scheduled to be completed in August 2010. Implementation of these measures should result in a 31 per cent reduction in energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The measures will also allow the Montreal Insectarium to save about $30,000 annually in its operating costs. In addition to these direct economic and environmental benefits, the project will show it is possible to carry out an integrated energy efficiency project without endangering a living collection.
