Description

The Regional District of the Central Okanagan will review and update its Regional Growth Strategy (RGS) in response to changes that have occurred in the area since the planning document was adopted in 2000. Several of the Region’s municipalities have recently updated their Official Community Plans and the Regional Growth Strategy therefore needs to be reviewed and updated to reflect the municipalities’ shared vision for sustainable growth. The population of the district, which includes the City of Kelowna, the Districts of Peachland, Lake Country and West Kelowna, and two First Nations, is expected to increase rapidly over the next 25 years. The RGS review will develop policies to sustainably manage this anticipated growth.
The review process will include consultations with citizens and leaders of the member municipalities, as well as with local First Nations, neighbouring regional districts and the province. The revised RGS will act as a framework to guide the growth of the entire region. It will include updated strategies for energy, transportation and water, an inventory of brownfield sites suitable for reclamation, and a discussion of waste management issues associated with the region’s growth.
The purpose of the RGS is to promote socially, economically and environmentally healthy growth that makes efficient use the region’s land, resources and public services. The goals of the strategy include controlling urban sprawl, promoting walking, bicycling and urban transit, protecting the environment, and promoting energy efficiency and conservation.
