Description
As part of its sustainable development strategy, the City of Quebec wants to develop an ecological management plan for its green spaces that will reduce maintenance intensity, while preserving a reasonable aesthetic appearance. The study and on-site trials will demonstrate the feasibility of reducing fuel consumption of motorized equipment and the use of chemical fertilizer and pesticides in relation to the City’s green spaces by introducing new ground covers, mowing less frequently, using biopesticides and natural fertilizers, creating new natural spaces integrated with the immediate environment and composting grass clippings naturally. Environmental benefits include the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, ground water table contamination and grass clippings at landfills. The City believes that an ecological lawn management approach will reduce annual emissions of carbon dioxide by 14.4 tonnes, hydrocarbons by 16.5 kilograms and nitrogen oxides by 0.31 kilograms. In addition, grass clippings will no longer be transported and disposed of at the landfill.
