Description
The Municipality will undertake a feasibility study to determine the best method to ecologically rehabilitate the Snide’s Lake’s watershed in order to ensure a sustainable source of drinking water for the residents of the Village of Shubenacadie (approx. 900) and be able to accommodate future growth. The study will provide a recommendation of the best method to remove nutrients directly from the lake and make recommendations for a long-term monitoring program to quantify improvement in the Lake’s water quality and overall ecology. The goal is a 60 per cent reduction in phosphorus levels and an increase in oxygen concentrations from 0.0 mg/L to 6.2 mg/L at 4.0 metre depth. The study will include an evaluation of the potential negative impacts of the existing drainage tile network and a cost-benefit analysis of removing all or part of the network, leaving it in place or neutralizing it by some other means. Another result of the study will be a forest management and reinstatement plan to ensure shoreline stability and minimization of sediment and nutrient loading.
