Description

With a growing need for office space, the Township of Springwater will construct a new building to consolidate its administrative services and council and committee facilities, currently housed in two locations 20 kilometres apart. The township and its local construction partners are incorporating many energy and cost efficiency measures in the design, including increased insulation in walls and roof, high-quality window glazing; extensive use of natural light; energy-recovery ventilation; variable-speed pumps and fans; radiant slab cooling; low-lighting power densities; condensing boilers; and displacement ventilation. Together, these choices will reduce energy consumption by 40.7 per cent and GHG emissions by 32.3 tonnes per year, compared with a similar facility reference under the Model National Energy Code for Buildings. The building is designed to accommodate up to 30 per cent more employees. The new building on the site of a former nursery will revitalize a derelict neighbourhood and encourage the development of recreational facilities the same area. Links with a trail network will encourage active transportation, and other nearby provincial and municipal buildings will reduce the need to travel and promote unity within the township.
