Description

The City of Gatineau will prepare a planning and sustainable development scheme (PSDS), a first for an urban municipality in Quebec. Preparation of the PSDS will span three years and will be inspired by the Natural Step process. Its main objectives will focus on economic efficiency, equity, social integration and environmental protection and will result in specific measures and a positive impact on management of residual matter, contaminated soil and sites, as well as water, transportation and energy. The PSDS will also be aimed at establishing guidelines for physically organizing the territory and for defining the major directions for long term development to be revised every 5 years. Information, awareness-building and consultation with all stakeholders are also objectives that will be part of the PSDS development and implementation.
An external sustainable development committee (SDC) made up of residents and concerned stakeholders and an internal committee made up of representatives of municipal departments will oversee PSDS implementation, monitoring and assessment. Management tools will be made available to the various internal stakeholders and performance indicators will be developed. These indicators notably inspired by those developed for Quebec’s sustainable development legislation and strategy will help the City focus on sustainable choices regarding planning and development of its territory.
